For this weeks’ Vanilla Sand Journal series we spoke to Joana Dias da Cunha. A believer in change, education and the choice to live sustainably above all. 

“What is your passion in life? And your job?”

My passion, sustainability. I am the founder of The Fair Bazaar, a Lisbon marketplace that selects the best sustainable brands. Our aim is to educate, inspire and empower a global community of change-makers to live a more conscious lifestyle and impact the world for the better. 



“Who or what inspires you to act sustainably?”

My little baby Mateus is my inspiration everyday. I want him to believe in a better world and my role as a mother is to influence him in a positive way. What fuels me everyday, is knowing that we are doing something good and with meaning.

“What makes you optimistic about businesses’ ability to rise to the sustainability challenge?”

Sustainability can be an overwhelming challenge to embrace in terms of Fashion. That’s why we host public events to share the experience and expertise of our community, in order to raise awareness of the current state of the national Sustainable Fashion industry and the innovative solutions improving our environmental impact. 

There are already some successful companies working on the sustainability challenge, like Patagonia or Reformantion for example. These great examples give me hope to believe that every company can build a profitable business that has a mission behind.

“Any helpful hints and tricks to do outside of work for a more sustainable life?”

Our day-to-day activities have to be mindful about our ecosystem. So, with that said, I suggest that you buy less and mend more, and prefer to buy sustainable products, with a higher quality that will last you longer, less pollutants to the environment. 

Try to buy in local shops, to reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation. Choose to walk or bike or use public transportations to get around. Recycle your waste. Lastly, and more importantly, keep researching new ways to help and put them in practice.

 

“What are you appreciating most about Vanilla Sand?”

Vanilla Sand is an incredible brand with an amazing story and inspiring founder behind. I believe we were the first retailer to partner with your young brand and we are very happy about that.



“Your favourite Vanilla Sand piece?”

My favourite product is anything with the Lemon print. I just fell in love with this pattern!
